New Motor Vehicle Sales, Total Vehicles - Short Term

• Trend - The January 2008 estimate for new motor vehicle sales (91 958) increased 0.9% when compared with December 2007. The trend estimate has been increasing for over 15 consecutive months. When compared to January 2007, the trend estimate increased by 8.6%.
• Seasonally adjusted - The January 2008 estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (92 309) increased by 0.6% compared with December 2007.

• Trend - All vehicle types recorded increases in trend estimates when comparing January 2008 to December 2007. Passenger vehicles increased by 1.0% while both other vehicles and sports utility vehicles increased by 0.8%. When compared to the same period 12 months ago, sports utility vehicles, other vehicles and passenger vehicles rose 19.0%, 15.9% and 3.3% respectively.
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing January 2008 to December 2007, sports utility vehicles and other vehicles increased by 2.9% and 1.5% respectively, while passenger vehicles decreased by 0.5%.

• Trend - When comparing January 2008 to December 2007, all states and territories showed increases in the trend estimate of total sales of new motor vehicles. The largest increase was for South Australia (2.1%) and Western Australia had the smallest increase of 0.4%.
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing January 2008 to December 2007, six states and territories showed increases in total sales. The largest increases were in South Australia and Tasmania, increasing by 12.2% and 7.0% respectively. Total sales decreased in Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory, by 7.4% and 0.1% respectively.
